Gilford, New Hampshire (USA) The Tannery Hill is a small foot bridge across Gunstock Brook. It was built in 1995 by local bridge builder Tim Andrews using local materials. It stands in a spot that was home to a full sized covered bridge until around 1950.

Christmas Farm Inn and Spa

Cozy New England Charm in White Mountains It’s a model scene for a Norman Rockwell painting: a crackling fireplace set in a New England farmhouse, with views of snow-covered mountains through the windows. Such images are par for the course at The Christmas Farm Inn and Spa. Built in 1786 on a 15-acre tract of land in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, the inn’s main house is the picture of early colonial American charm, from the wide-plank floors and patchwork quilts to, yes, the wood-burning fireplace. Each of the bed and breakfast’s 18 uniquely decorated main-inn guest rooms and salt-box guest rooms has a yule-themed moniker, such as Sleigh Bells, Blitzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The spacious latter room features cherry furniture, plaid curtains, and an ottoman constructed from holiday fruitcakes deemed too dense to eat. The carriage house rests on the hillside just above the main house, and boasts a great room with a stone fireplace and elegant rooms with two-person whirlpool tubs. From the carriage house, there is easy access to the Aveda Concept spa, which is decked out in steam and massage rooms, a relaxation lounge, and seven treatment rooms. Guests can also unwind in an indoor pool and jacuzzi, or kick back on the porch, where white rocking chairs face the picturesque summits of the Presidential Range. For dinner, chef Stan Shafer cooks up New England classics such as clam chowder as well as innovative dishes such as maple-pecan salmon. Next door, the Mistletoe Pub serves up frothy brews in a convivial atmosphere. Jackson, New Hampshire: Mountain Splendor, Covered Bridges, and White-Steeple Churches Surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest on all sides, the sleepy town of Jackson is naturally positioned for peaceful solitude. The meadows, lakes, and mountain peaks dotting the landscape also make it a haven for hikers, paddlers, and feral hobbits. It’s possible to enjoy wintertime activities such as downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling either at the inn or within a 20-minute drive. Sweeping mountain vistas and colonial architecture unfold along the White Mountain Scenic Byway, where one can notch up-close views of covered bridges, white-steeple churches, and quaint country cottages. Right off the byway, there are nearly 100 miles of groomed trails leading in every direction, which become a destination for cross-country skiers after a good snowfall. Downhill skiers and snowboarders can find numerous ski resorts in the area as well.
HOME Interior

Nestled into a New Hampshire hillside, the handsome Colonial fits right in—though it was built in 2006, from an authentic house plan.
Christmas Farm Inn and Spa

Charming New England Inn amid the White Mountains Though its name implies a winter destination, Christmas Farm Inn and Spa has all the makings of a storybook hideaway no matter the season. Its main house was built in 1786 on a 15-acre tract of land near ski resorts in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. With its wide-plank floors and patchwork quilts, the building is a picture of New England charm. The hotel is conveniently located near several attractions, including the scenic trails of the White Mountain National Forest. Each of the bed and breakfast’s 18 guest rooms in the main inn and saltbox has a Yule-themed moniker, such as Sleigh Bells, Blitzen, and Mr. and Mrs. Claus. The latter features cherry furniture, plaid curtains, and an ottoman crafted from leftover holiday fruitcakes. The carriage house rests on the hillside just above the main house and boasts a great room with a stone fireplace, a perfect spot to enjoy the wine included with this Getaway. One of the inn’s oldest parts is the barn, where the haylofts have been converted into two-story barn-loft suites. Many of the other rooms have romantic touches to them, too, such as fireplaces and two-person whirlpool tubs. The onsite Aveda concept spa features steam and massage rooms, a relaxation lounge, and seven treatment rooms; this Getaway includes a $10 credit for services. Unwind in the indoor pool and jacuzzi, or retire to the porch that faces the picturesque mountains of the Presidential Range. For dinner, chef Stan Shafer—named Chef of the Year by the American Culinary Federation—cooks up New England classics such as clam chowder and innovative dishes such as maple-pecan salmon. Choose option four, five, or six to enjoy an included dinner for two. Next door, bartenders at the pub serve up frosty brews in a lively atmosphere. Jackson, New Hampshire: Cross-Country and Downhill Skiing amid the Mountains in New England The sleepy town of Jackson is surrounded by the White Mountain National Forest on all sides. When the meadows, lakes, and mountain peaks here are covered in snow, Jackson is a popular spot for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and snowmobiling. Black Mountain ski resort is located just about 8 miles from the inn, and Wildcat Mountain, one of the area’s most popular alpine ski sites, is situated about 6 miles north. In the summer, Wildcat Mountain offers gondola rides up to the summit, where you can take in sweeping scenic views of the area. The White Mountain National Forest, which spans more than 1,000 square miles, is a massive playground for hiking, picnicking, fishing, and viewing wildlife. The warmer seasons also mean the opening of Story Land, an imaginative theme park that has delighted children since 1954. Nearby, sweeping mountain vistas and colonial architecture unfold along the 100-mile White Mountains Trail National Scenic Byway. A segment of the loop winds near Jackson, passing white-steeple churches, country cottages, and covered bridges. Miles of groomed hiking trails lead off from the byway in every direction, attracting cross-country skiers after fresh snowfalls. Love to travel?
